History

Like some other bowls clubs in the region, Townsend Hook has a historical relationship with the paper-making industry.

In the mid-19th century Charles Townsend Hook acquired Snodland Paper Mill and expanded his family business to paper making. The business changed hands over the years, becoming part of Reed International and subsequently part of Rupert Murdoch's News International. The bowls club was formed in 1926 and stems from the Townsend Hook Sports Club, created in 1920. That became the Smurfit Townsend Hook Sports and Social Club. The bowls club finally severed connections with the paper industry and moved to its present location in 2011. However, we still bear the name of Townsend Hook, and the initials CTH in the club logo.
